I am always getting asked about my vintage inspired shipping tags. I use these to attach to my journals that I have for sale at Junction 71 in Amherst, NH. I found myself in need of more, so I thought that I would document how I do it. I not only use these for tagging my journals, but I love to have them all piled in a jar to complete my vintagy look in my art room. They keep my room smelling so amazing, and they are not that shabby to look at if I do say so myself.
Now, you can make fun tags at home using my method. There are so many different ways people make them, and I have used many successful recipes. The good thing about making tags at home is there really isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. I have tried many different ingredients and the one ingredient that is the most important to me will always be the instant coffee. I have tried tea and brewed coffee, but using the instant coffee has always given me the dark color that I am looking for. Oh, I always make up about 200 shipping tags at a time, so I don’t have to do this as often. I also like to use the little round tags that have the metal rings. I do not use these that often, but they make cute little thank you notes after you have wrapped a book. Sometimes, just a cute little thank you is enough.
Are you ready? Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and get ready to make magic!
8 TB instant Folgers coffee
8 TB vanilla
3/4 cloves- I use whole unless you are wanting a grungy look then go for it.
3/4 cinnamon – options but great to add more of a grungy look.
3 cups of boiling water
I mix it all up and let it cool enough that I can touch it. I let the tags soak for a minute or two, but not longer than 5 or 6 minutes. I try to pull the tag’s string through my fingers to remove the excess liquid before I line them all up on my baking sheet.
Once I am finished lining them all up on my first baking sheet, I slip them into the oven. I let these cook while I am adding more tags to the next baking sheet. Keep an eye on them, but I have found that by the time I am finished applying the other soaking tags to the baking sheet the first pan is ready to come out of the oven. Every oven is different though, so don’t let these babies burn! They cook fast and really have a great color, in my opinion. Sometimes, I like to double dip and run them into the oven again. It really depends on the shade of brown that you are looking for. The back side of the tags are always a bit lighter. You can turn them in the oven if you would like, but I do not find it to be that different to want to do this anymore.
After I remove them from the baking sheet, I just pile them up on the counter and let them continue to dry out over night and that is it! OH!! Do remember to wear gloves or else you will stain your nails! I have made this mistake more than I care to admit and it only take one quick dip in this magic juice to do it. Ha ha.
