Vintage Inspired Shipping Tags

I am always getting asked about my vintage inspired shipping tags. I use these to attach to my journals that I have for sale at Junction 71  in Amherst, NH. I found myself in need of more, so I thought that I would document how I do it. I not only use these for tagging my journals, but I love to have them all piled in a jar to complete my vintagy look in my art room. They keep my room smelling so amazing, and they are not that shabby to look at if I do say so myself.

Homemade vintage shipping tags

Now, you can make fun tags at home using my method. There are so many different ways people make them, and I have used many successful recipes. The good thing about making tags at home is there really isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. I have tried many different ingredients and the one ingredient that is the most important to me will always be the instant coffee. I have tried tea and brewed coffee, but using the instant coffee has always given me the dark color that I am looking for.  Oh, I always make up about 200 shipping tags at a time, so I don’t have to do this as often. I also like to use the little round tags that have the metal rings. I do not use these that often, but they make cute little thank you notes after you have wrapped a book. Sometimes, just a cute little thank you is enough.

Are you ready? Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and get ready to make magic!

Ingredients~

8 TB instant Folgers coffee

8 TB vanilla

3/4 cloves- I use whole unless you are wanting a grungy look then go for it.

3/4 cinnamon – options but great to add more of a grungy look.

3 cups of boiling water

I mix it all up and let it cool enough that I can touch it. I let the tags soak for a minute or two, but not longer than 5 or 6 minutes. I try to pull the tag’s string through my fingers to remove the excess liquid before I line them all up on my baking sheet.

cooking tags

Once I am finished lining them all up on my first baking sheet, I slip them into the oven. I let these cook while I am adding more tags to the next baking sheet. Keep an eye on them, but I have found that by the time I am finished applying the other soaking tags to the baking sheet the first pan is ready to come out of the oven. Every oven is different though, so don’t let these babies burn! They cook fast and really have a great color, in my opinion. Sometimes, I like to double dip and run them into the oven again. It really depends on the shade of brown that you are looking for. The back side of the tags are always a bit lighter. You can turn them in the oven if you would like, but I do not find it to be that different to want to do this anymore.

rustic tags

After I remove them from the baking sheet, I just pile them up on the counter and let them continue to dry out over night and that is it! OH!! Do remember to wear gloves or else you will stain your nails! I have made this mistake more than I care to admit and it only take one quick dip in this magic juice to do it. Ha ha. I hope you have fun making tags and feel free to share with my your creations using these!

The Nib and Quill travels to the Galleries with artist Daniel Lai

artist Daniel Lai sculpture

Have you ever had a dream that seemed far-fetched, only to have it come true in the most unexpected way? I became a part of this lucky sisterhood a few weeks ago. You see, my dream has always been to have my work featured in an art gallery and it is through my discovery of an amazing artist’s creative use of my small leather bound journals that has brought the unexpected realization of my dream.

The creative artist is Daniel Lai. And the vehicle for the realization of my dream is through Daniel’s use of my little leather bound books in his one-of-a kind book sculptures. b

Daniel and his art are amazing. Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Daniel moved to the United States in late December of 1999. Ever in pursuit of knowledge and beauty he is a life-long learner. His current exploration is engaging in the pursuit of a Ph.D. in Criminology. When he isn’t nose deep in a mighty academic tome, he is creating art out of these vessels of knowledge.

As a young child, bound with the endless creative energy of youth he would fold the pages of his textbooks into intricate sculptures. It is this elixir of youth, books, and worldly muses that were the impetus of his love of sculpting and you have a master book artist! a

Creating book art to display on your walls

Daniel’s book sculptures are often adorned with a clay figure, keys and sometimes the small leather bound books. These are the small leather bound books that I create in my shop, The Nib and Quill. Many of Daniel’s works can be seen at Kenjio, his Etsy store.

He has been featured on T.V., and his work has been published in numerous books and magazines. Although his work is stunning online, you must see his work in person. Just to name a few places, his book sculptures can be found at The Bennet Gallery in Nashville, TN and The Haen Gallery in Asheville, NC.

Daniel’s next show is at the Piedmont Park Art Fest, Atlanta GA. August 15th and 16th.

A Moment to Share

Ginnifer Goodwin responds moment to share vintage gifts wax stamp scroll period journal

I have a few quiet moments and would like to take the time to share. As many of you may know, I was recently selected to be one of six unique artisans to be featured in The Artisan Group’s TAGazine for the 2015 GBK’s MTV Movie Awards Celebrity Gift Lounge. Needless to say, I was shocked and completely honored to have been one of the 6 chosen.

It really made me stop and think about my work and how inspired I truly am by what I do and how I want my books to inspire you, as well. My rustic guest books, journals, and special event books, just to name a few, are created to inspire others to document their history. I want people to be able to share and capture their precious memories, birth announcements, artwork, or their everyday childhood memories. And I painstakingly sew my books with care to ensure they will last a lifetime, creating heirloom quality as I sew. sewing

Handmade journals with a vintage feel

Each journal page is hand torn to create a special vintage feel, which I am known for. Authentic skeleton keys are added to remind us all of the times gone by. I seriously get excited just thinking about my journals and what they really mean to me. My packaging and presentation is just as important to me as the book itself. I gift wrap every journal as if I am receiving it myself.

The attention to detail is not forgotten here! I include little vintage inspired goodies along with extra journal paper to test your pens. Often I use fountain pens and I personally like to have a test sheet, just in case. I really want my customers to have an enjoyable experience when they purchase from The Nib and Quill. vintage gifts

It brings me great joy knowing that I can pass along my books to my children. And I can only hope that my customers will feel the same way. So, whatever you decide to fill your Nib and Quill journals with, just know that they were created with love and care in mind. I know that it will show, from my craftsmanship to my packaging. Thanks for letting me share with you today!

Getting Back to the Rhythm of Things

deer by the hedge NH rhythm of things

I have been so very busy with The Nib and Quill that I seem to have little time for anything else. Of course, my family is my main concern. They always have my heart first. But the one thing that I am missing most is my journal time. I find it so silly that I make these beautiful journals to write and note all the wonderful things in my life and I never have the time to actually write in one.

During one of our family outing this weekend, Hayes (my hubby) shared a quote. It was, “Never a day without a line ~ Horace”. It just struck a chord with me. I have decided to run with this in my life, as well as make it my new business motto.

I don’t know about you guys, but I know I feel so much better after I can jot down a few lines before bed. I like to reflect on the wonders of the day.

A little thing that I do with the kids is look for God’s daily gifts. I believe that He blesses us with a “happy” and it is up to us to find it. This weekend we were driving through the Arboretum in town and within 10 feet of our car was a deer munching on the leaves of a beautiful tree.He glanced at us several times, but knowing we were no danger to him, he continued to eat. The children thought it was so amazing. That was just one of our gifts! This is just another example of things that I like to journal.

What is the one thing you do to ease your mind, help with stress, or just plain fun for the day that you can’t live without?

And the Journal goes to Ryan Gosling~

Ryan Gosling leather pocket Journal

It has been a little bit since I have written last. I promise to stay more in touch! The Artisan Group just gifted to none other than Celebrity Ryan Gosling, and I am honored to announce that I was one of the artisans selected to be involved.

I wanted something very manly, so leather was my choice. I found a beautiful rugged tan leather to use and I created a chunky leather journal with a braided waxed linen wrap for the closure.  And I was able to have enough leather to create the exact journal three times. So, I have a few in the shop available for purchase.

They will not last long, so hurry. Only two left! It is small enough to fit in a guy’s hand and rugged enough to show it off! Plus, Ryan Gosling has one too! Ahh, pinch me! I just gifted to Ryan Gosling…. And no, I didn’t write my phone number inside of it. My husband checked.
